Distillery Information
This Orkney distillery was founded in 1885 by Macfarlane & Townsend, a Glasgow blending company. In 1919 the distillery was almost destroyed by fire but was saved by sailors working nearby, who formed a human chain and carried buckets of water to extinguish the flames. Hiram Walker & Sons bought the distillery in 1954, rebuilding it before refurbishing it again in 1978. The distillery was mothballed for a few years in 1994. In 1997, production resumed, albeit in limited quantities. The future of the distillery was uncertain, in 2004, many thought the distillery would close until the owners decided to invest by restoring, carrying out rebuilding work at the site. Pernod Ricard then took ownership in 2005 and the distillery went into full production months later.
